Companies often have environmental policies where they recycle waste paper, and ink cartridges, and put energy-saving stickers on switches to remind people to turn off the lights. Companies are increasingly becoming Fairtrade workplaces, pledging to buy only Fairtrade tea, coffee, and sugar. But this is for adults, what about kids?
Well, the Eco-School program enables schools to become more inspiring places to learn about eco-issues, and the schools themselves will be able to reduce their environmental impact both within the school and in the wider community, including their own homes.
Once registered the school will become part of an international school working for sustainable development and a better quality of life for the local and global community. This global development perspective will enable them to better understand poverty and appreciate the work of Live Aid and international charities such as Oxfam and the Red Cross.

The Eco-Schools program provides a simple framework to enable schools to analyze their operations and become more sustainable. Similar to Business Re-engineering in companies but in manageable bite size.
Student participation is an important part of the Eco-School program. Involving students throughout the process, including monitoring, action planning, and decision-making, fosters a sense of real ownership of the program and their responsibility to the school environment and local community.
There is also an awards scheme that will raise the school's profile in the wider community and provide incentives for participation. Schools can also be featured in the local and regional media when they reach the award level.
There are three levels of reward:
Bronze Award - Self-assessment is done through a website leading to a certificate
0 Silver Award - Self-assessment done through the website leading to a certificate
O Green Flag - Externally assessed resulting in a certificate and a flag
Eco-schools are run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It is administered by ENCAMS in England and Clear Northern Ireland in Northern Ireland. Eco-Schools are supported by various partners.

If schools also want to learn about organic issues, The Soil Association is holding Food for Life workshops in interested schools to encourage the use of organic and local produce in school meals. This is a one-day workshop for Key Stage II students. This Soil Association is administered by the Department of Education. The workshops give children the opportunity to explore healthy eating, and local and organic foods through a topic of their choice.
Schools also need knowledge of good practices when sourcing healthy food for school meals. Schools can improve children's eating habits and increase their understanding of food through farm visits and classroom activities. Wouldn't it be great if all schools had gardens so kids could see that food doesn't just come from packets or miraculously appear in stores?
